Straight Outta Compton

In the late 1980s NWA faced boycotts, censorship, and FBI threats. In 2015 their biopic became the nation’s number one film.

Objectives

After completing this assignment, students should be able to

• Identify the four principle characters: Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Jerry Heller
• Summarize police/community relations in Compton, as presented in the film
• Summarize the band members’ relationships to the recording industry, as presented in the film
• Summarize the role of female characters in the film
• Connect the spoken motif that opens and closes the film–“You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge”–to its plot, characters, and theme
