In this class we share and workshop sample paragraphs.

This assignment covers two things.

Grading the First Paragraphs

As our syllabus states, I will use the Writing Criteria to evaluate all written assignments, including the First Paragraphs.

Paragraph Coherence

Our workshop will test the coherence of the paragraph by re-constructing two of mine.

As you edit your own paragraphs, here are some questions to keep in mind.

  • Does the paragraph have a clear topic sentence that announces its overall point?
  • How well does each sentence fit into the paragraph’s overall pattern of organization?
  • Does the idea presented in each sentence follow logically from what came before?
  • Do the sentences use transitions to demonstrate the connections among its sentences and ideas?
