The Durga Puja ceremony requires that priests beg prostitutes for soil from outside their homes, which the priests then use to construct the idol of the goddess Durga.
In the film, Parvati (an aristocrat) and Chandramukhi (a prostitute) are bound by their mutual love for and grief over Devdas. The Durga Puja ceremony provides them the occasion to meet on somewhat equal terms.
