The novel Devdas, written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was published in 1917. It tells the story of a love triangle that ends tragically with the death of the man, Devdas Mukherjee, who has committed a slow suicide through alcohol.
Devdas loves Parvati, a childhood friend and neighbor. Both Parvati and Chandramukhi love Devdas, but caste and class barriers prevent him from being with either of the two women.
The novel has become one of Indian cinema's most popular stories, adapted into more than a dozen films, many of which are listed on Wikipedia.
We are studying the 2002 version starring SRK, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. In the image below, Chandramukhi (Dixit) is on the left and Parvati (Bachchan), also called Paro, is on the right.
