Summary

Directed by Chia-Liang Liu and released in 1978, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin tells the story of Liu Yu-te (Gordon Liu Chia-hui), who flees from an oppressive, invading army that has killed his father and many of his friends. He finds refuge at the (real-life) temple of the Shaolin Buddhist monks. There he trains in kung fu, becomes their most advanced pupil, and returns home to seek recruits, teach the Shaolin fighting style, and challenge the occupying army.

A longer summary is included on the assignment page.

The RZA, from the Film Comment interview

That one changed my life. It’s like a kung fu Rocky but the training and the story are great....It was through these films that I was able to see and feel from a non-Western point of view.
